Grabbed from [info]padfootslover (I'm still thinking of something to ask you...:p)

The problem with LJ: we all think we are so close, but really, we know nothing about each other. So ask me something you want to know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Ask away. Then post this in your LJ and find out what people don't know about you

Aisling Symes

Last Monday, a few minutes drive from my house a 2 year old girl named Aisling (Ashling) Symes went missing.
This doesn't happen in NZ often, the last child to go missing was over 6 years ago. Aislings mum was fixing a broken washing machine, checking on both her daughters frequently. Her world fell apart when she looked up to find her little girl gone.
For a week Police from my community have been searching the neighbourhood, creeks and bush to try and find Aisling. Wherever you go, the movies, the gym, the supermarket, the petrol station, anywhere; the walls and windows are covered in missing persons posters. It's surreal. I've never experienced anything like it. And being SO close to home it hit hard. Our community isn't small. We live in a suburb in a city of over 1 million people. But so many people I know have been deeply affected by the case, it's so close to home, I drive past the road she went missing on almost ever day.

Last night, a week after Aisling went missing our normal tv viewing was interupted by Breaking News. We rarely get Breaking News here, not stuff that makes the normal program stop suddenly.
A small body of a child has been found in a drain/pipe less than 200m from where Aisling went missing. Police have not confirmed it is Aisling, but it's highly likely.
I cried. I couldn't help it. I was sad, angry and frustrated all at once. Everyone believed, had that little bit of hope that someone had taken her and they still had her and that she'd be found, alive and well and returned to her parents and sister.
Last Monday Auckland had a heavy spring rain. The body was found 36m down a stormwater drain, over 1m under the ground. Though Police haven't ruled out foul play it is possible Aisling crawled into the drain before being swept deeper.

District 9 and Inglorious Basterds

In the past few weeks I've seen two noteworthy films. HBP was in there, but it just doesn't reach the same level as these two.

District 9.
Now, I must say I WENT into the cinema wanting to like this film to prove my one of my aquaitances wrong that not all movies need to be action packed drivel, like Transformers 2.
ANYWAY. No matter my mindset as the movie started, this film was one of sheer brilliance. Just the right length to keep you interested in an on-the-edge-of-your seat kind of way without being too long and boring. AND it was filled with cringe worthy prejudices and racism that is so true (yet so unfortunate) to our human character that have you compelled to get behind and support the aliens (every South African I befriend from here on out has to say 'Prawns' to me at least half a dozen times). I've heard many people complain that it was a rip off of an Apartheid movie (or play) (district 6), and I can't say it isn't, because I haven't seen District 6. BUT in itself District 9 was brilliant and gritty, with hints of Peter Jacksons early work shining through in his producing duties. Highly recommended.

Inglorious Basterds.
Went to see this last week and entered the cinema with mixed feelings. I like Quinten Tarintino's work, it has that edgy (yet gory) feel that is intersected by intense moments of dialogue. But I'd read two reviews for this movie. One gave it 1 out of 5 stars, the other 4.5 out of 5. So after reading polar opposite reviews I was keen to see what I thought.
I was captured the first scene in (best in the movie IMO). Simple, yet filled with tension that makes you just want to get up and yell at the movie screen. I LOVED the double plot that QT does so well, and how they intersected. In fact that's what made the movie so great. From the trailer I thought it was going to be a bunch of American Jews led by Brad Pitt killing and scalping Nazi's. It was the total opposite (though, that did happen). And the fact that Brad Pitt (as brilliant as he was at Lt Aldo Raine) was outshone by TWO of the other actors (Christopher Waltz and Melanie Laurent) made it even better. LOVE a movie where the 'lead actor'/''well known face' is able to mix with the rest of the cast without overshadowing the whole film. I admit, any level of gore (scalping, baseball bat etc) had me covering my eyes with my hands - but I'm a whimp like that ;) BUT rather than the film being immersed in it to get all those teenaged boys into the cinema, Inglorious Basterds was not nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be, and the LONG scenes with character development, tension and the right level of humour were perfect. In fact the two and a half hours of film did not feel like two and a half hours, not once did I think it was being drawn out (which happend frequently in HBP).
In fact, Inglorious Basterds was one of those movies where I felt compelled to CLAP at the end (I refrained).

Both are definately on my must by dvd list.

p.s. LOVING the new Bon Jovi song and music video, the new album will be on my to-santa list.

Okay, so over the last week and a bit I've watched season 1 and 2 of Supernatural, and I've already watched up to episode 13 of season 3 on the tv. So I came to a fork in the road. Do I keep watching online (and skyrocketing my internet capacity) or do I just make do with Friday nights?

Found out that there are three more episodes of season 3 to air here before the end of the season. LAST time they just kept going straight from season 2 to 3, if they do that with 3 to 4 then I'll stick to watching it on tv. If they decide (for some stupid reason) NOT to show season 4 immediately, I'll be turning back to the internet. Problem solved :)

Now that I'm completely obsessed with yet another thing in this pop culture world of ours, I need a distraction.

And I may have found it. The new Diana Gabaldon book came out yesterday, so I might start back at the beginning and work my way through to the new one, which will take me till, oh about September NEXT year ;)

Other than that I've joined the gym and have a pass for the pool so I have the gym three nights a week plus swimming when I feel like it (which lately is every day I'm not at the gym). So that's a good time killer :) And then there's work. Which is as boring as it normally is. Contemplating a career change and I've only been out of uni for 11 months..... Maybe I'll stick with it for a while longer.

Summer is also on it's way here, we'll ignore the thunderstorm with pingpong ball sized hail stones we had last night...the days are getting longer and warmer. I love summer.

So, a while back I was at my sisters and she sat down to watch Supernatural. I'd never watched it before and was immediately enamoured by Dean Winchester. I swear I had a 'who-the-f-is-that?!' moment. Turns out we down here in NZ suck at playing shows that aren't, well, as popular as most, so we're only up to season 3 (and they like to play them late on a Friday night which doesnt help). Recently I've been spending my free time at home watching season one online. I'm now offically obsessed and love the show! And Jensen Ackles seems to have become a nice substitute for my weekly swoon sessions while Lost is on hiatus.

And the good thing? I have LOTS more episodes to watch...about 3-4 seasons worth :)

It's also nice to know something else that's different between my twin and I. We have different taste in men. Which isn't overly surprising, but she prefers Sam...but he's just a tad too....pretty for me.

Oh, and like I've mentioned, I still have a lot to go, so no spoilers please :)

Yesterday I was returning a faulty product to a electronic store (faulty as in it ripped out some of the insides of my car), and I was merrily explaining the situation to the cashier when I heard a familiar southern drawl to my right. As I finished talking I had a quick look, and there on a BIG screen TV was a shirtless Sawyer standing in the middle of a jungle, doing what he does best, grinning with his knowing smirk, dimples and all. I was almost a puddle of goo but held myself together.

Needless to say I missed the next five words that came out of the cashiers mouth.

When I was eleven, my mum took my sister and I to our first concert. The singer...Cliff Richard. It was awesome, I was completely in love with his music because mum was such a big fan.

He's coming back for three concerts in February next year...I'm seriously contemplating going :)

Fringe

We've only had this new show in NZ for about four episodes now and because it replaced my Wednesday night LOST slot, I figured I had nothing better to do, and gave it a go.

The general idea behind the show is interesting, though what they call 'Fringe Science' I'd normally label and 'Pseudo Science' and avoid like the plauge (normally it's aliens that create all the cool archaeology...not us measley humans), but as its all just a TV show it doesn't particularly matter.

I haven't been able to really get into this show as much as I thought I would, and I've figured out that the only reason I am still watching it is for one thing.

Joshua Jackson.

I never really watched Dawsons Creek, and haven't really seen him in much else, but I think he's absolutely brilliant and seems completely under-rated as an actor. Team him up with a slightly odd John Noble (who reminds me of Denathor whenever he opens his mouth) and it's a great combination. And that's why I'm going to keep watching Fringe. Hopefully the story lines will get a bit better ;)

It helps that he's not too bad to look at. Not as drool worthy as Josh Holloway, but he has a certain George Clooney appeal.

and bought the Movie Spoilers Hoodie from my last post (they'd sold out of t-shirts).
This impulse buy is bad for two reasons.
1. It's in US dollars, so the 'cheap' $25 is going to cost me closer to $65NZ (inc. shipping)
2. I haven't been paid for three weeks, and the excuse that I don't have to pay my credit card off for at least a month and a half isn't really the best excuse...

I need to stop spending my money...

No, not about HBP (I have yet to see it, and I assume you all have read the book anyway). I showed one of my friends and she hadn't read the books. I told her it was her own fault, she should be prepared for spoilers if she hasn't read any of the HP books.

This is a T-shirt or Hoodie with various movie spoilers on it. From http://www.threadless.com/product/844/Spoilt

I think it's brilliant.

I just finished a big chunk of work I've been working on solidly for two weeks. It was easy work, required a bit of brain power - which I was grateful for - but got a bit monotonous after a while. But it's quarter to five, Friday evening and I can go home knowing that I don't have to do anymore on Monday. It's like handing in an assignment at uni, I feel somewhat lighter :)

...we just have to check that I did all 130 assessments right...

p.s. I was going to use my Sheldon 'Smile!' userpic for this. But I can't help it, I'm so head over heels for this one of Sawyer...

The following is purely me having a rant. I am bursting with need to express my opinions on this, and figured you can all be a good medium to express them to. The topic is on a murder trial taking place in New Zealand, some parts may be graphic but I can't barely believe the psycho-babble that keeps coming out of the accused mouth.

1. New movie comes out this week. For a while I've been like 'Meh' about the release. In the past I've always been dissapointed with the movie versions. HOWEVER, I've only read HBP once (going to rectify that soon), SO I really have no idea what to expect, I'll be watching it going 'Oh yeah! I forgot about that!' instead of 'OMG I can't believe the changed that/missed that/screwed that up'.

2. I have to WAIT till the last weekend of July at the earliest before I can see it. This is due to two reasons. One: My HP buddy is currently travelling through Canada and the US so she won't be here to share my HP fun till then (and I promised her I'd wait). Two: We both have free tickets to a luxury lazy boy cinema which we'll use. It will be on no complementary/no free tickets for at least two weeks after the release, so I'd have to wait anyway.

3. Now it's only day's till the release I'm extrememly excited, however due to point 2 I'm also slightly miffed I'm going to have to wait.

4. Re-reading all the books again. I was going to wait till after HBP to do this. However the Philosophers Stone was staring at me so I started reading it last night. Half way through already and LOVING knowing how it all ends after Deathly Hallows. This is the first time I've read the books since reading book 7 and its amazing all these little things like foreshadowing or just funny tid-bits you pick up on.

5. It's cold in my office. It's never cold in my office. Someone's stuffed up the heating/ac. To rectify this I have a nice hot cuppa tea :)

From stuff.co.nz: A new version of Ben E King's Stand By Me featuring Jon Bon Jovi dueting in Farsi with exiled Iranian singer Andy Madadian, is making the rounds as an online video.

The track's co-producer, Don Was, says the video is meant to send "a musical message of worldwide solidarity" to the Iranian people in the aftermath of the country's recent disputed election.

Was tells Billboard.com that the session, which took place last Wednesday in Los Angeles, was spurred by a conversation he had with Madadian about "whether there was something we could do just to send out a little message of solidarity, remembering the '60s, believing music can change things."

When they arrived to record the song, they found Bon Jovi, guitarist Richie Sambora and John Shanks, who's producing their next album, sitting outside and having lunch.

"They asked what we were doing, I told them, and Jon said, 'Look, man, if you do it right now we'll do it with you,'" Was recalls. "So we did."

Madadian - who's lived in the US since the Iranian revolution of 1979 - and Bon Jovi duet on the song, with both men singing the first verse in Farsi. Sambora plays a guitar solo, with Was on bass, Patrick Leonard on keyboards and Jeff Rothchild on drums.

"We just cut it," Was says, "and the video is the session. It took about four hours and just fell into place nicely." The video, which features footage and still photos from the session, went up on Was' portion of My Damn Channel on Saturday and was quickly disseminated via MySpace, Facebook, Twitter and other sites. At the end of the video Madadian and Bon Jovi stand next to each other, with the latter holding a sign saying "We are one" in Farsi.

"It is not for sale," Was says. "It wasn't intended to be on the Billboard charts, wasn't meant to be a hit record or even pressed on a CD. It's intended to be downloaded and shared by the Iranian people. The whole idea was to get it into Iran and tell them...to carry on, that the world is watching and we're with you."

I really want this on my ipod. Unfortunately the 'it is not for sale' seems to be holding up....:(
